My passion for photography is rooted in the connections I make with people and place, and for the possibility photography holds for affecting positive change. Through connection I feel we are shown a clearer picture of who we are and why we exist. My background has led me to find beauty in places where many people would perhaps not initially see it. Both my parents were aspiring artists and we lived what could be described as a nomadic life on the margins of society. Having grown up in a culture of poverty, I believe, has given me a particularly empathetic approach to my subjects, most of which explore people in difficult circumstances. I agree with the great Indian poet Tagore, who said, "When we feel beauty we know it as truth." While I strive for formal rigor in my photographs, what I am most concerned with is their emotional impact and resonance. When photographing difficult circumstances it is important to me to show both the challenges people face, as well as the compassion of those offering support. In this way, I am able to offer my own support, better understand my past, and tell the stories I feel need to be told.
