My mother Pilgrim Sutherland, wanted to write about this series of photographs and her experience. The experience of photographing her through this crisis gave me a deeper understanding of the fragility of life and how support can help give us the strength to edure. -Marq Sutherland
“This photo narrative of the trauma of my heart attack – from before surgery, after surgery, and after a year of recovery was first meant to be for my kids. When it started Marq had no idea if I would live or die. His idea was to share what was going on for family who couldn’t be there. As you can see there is a happy ending.
Most of the time I wasn’t aware of what Marq was doing. He has a way of relaxing his subject and just making it fun, or responding to his loving concern of which there was no panic or denial just an optimistic outlook of, “Your Ok and all will be well”. I appreciate him giving me positive memories of those traumatic days.” - Pilgrim Sutherland
