    There is a moment of connection that gives a glimpse into an individual; while not an absolute truth of every aspect of the person or their culture, it gives an important insight into who we all are.


    In the fall of 1999 I traveled around the world aboard the USS Explorer, a cruise ship converted into a university campus called Semester At Sea. These images are of moments given to me by children along my journey. I did not direct anyones pose. In all but one photograph (School Girl, Mekong Delta), I asked permission through gesture and expression. For me, they convey the inner strength and emotion we all share as human beings, and hope for our future.
