Marq Sutherland

American, b. 1974

Born in San Diego, California, Marq Sutherland was raised in numerous areas of the country but considers New Mexico his home. After serving in the US Air Force as an Explosives K-9 handler and trainer Marq studied music and technology at the College of Santa Fe. In his third year at age 24 he discovered his passion for photography. A year later he had the opportunity to travel around the world aboard the study abroad program Semester At Sea, where he photographed his first project, Moments Given: Children in our World, a series capturing moments of connection with children along his journey. In 2001 he graduated from the College of Santa Fe with a self-designed 156 credit hour degree in Photography, Music and Technology.

In 2001-2002 Marq photographed a documentation of a Cambodian non-governmental organization, FRIENDS/Mith Samlanh, who help reintegrate street children back into society through outreach, education, and vocational training. The photographs went to raise money for their programs through exhibitions and promotion through the Asia Foundation for Philanthropy. In 2002 Marq was a finalist for the Willard Van Dyke Award through the NM Council on Photography. In 2005 he received his MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute and was selected to exhibit at the Benicia Arts Center’s annual showcase, Cream – from the top, introducing artists that have risen to the top of their classes in the Bay Area. He has been a mentor in photography for the Santa Fe Charter High School, Monte Del Sol, and taught Digital Photography Workshops for homeless teens through the Santa Fe Youth Drop-In Shelter. In 2008 Marq received a Helen Wurlitzer Foundation Fellowship. He has worked as a photo editor for Fashion.net since 2007. In 2009 he completed writing the curriculum for the upper division Photojournalism and Documentary Photography course at the Art Center Design College in Tucson, Arizona. He currently lives and works as a freelancer in New Mexico. His clients have included: The Associated Press, BNFL Instruments Inc., Random House/Pantheon Books, PBS, Youth Orchestra Monterey, Santa Fe Center for Photography, and Gwyn & Gwyn Arts, Ltd.
